Climate Grants

Originally climate was considered the composite or generally prevailing weather conditions of a region, as temperature, air pressure, humidity, precipitation, sunshine, cloudiness, and winds.  Today climate is more encompassing and refers to any environmental attribute including use of natural resources, water consumption, air quality and activities that impact the environment.

Climate Grants includes:

Climate Ready Program

The Climate Ready program ($75m over 4 years) is a competitive grants program providing grants from $50,000 up to $5m on a matching funding basis to support research and development, proof-of-concept and early-stage commercialisation activities to develop solutions to climate change challenges.

Clean Business Australia

The Green Building Fund primarily targets the owners of existing commercial office buildings. It supports retro-fitting and retro-commissioning of these buildings, to reduce base building energy consumption. Grants of $50,000 to $500,000 are available, for up to 50% of project costs.

  • $100m Residential Rebate Program providing rebates for hot water systems, insulation, rainwater tanks and washing machines

Climate Change Public Facilities program

The aim of the Public Facilities Program is to assist water and energy savings in public and educational facilities in NSW. The focus is on projects delivering maximum demonstration and/or educational value.

The Green Building Fund ($90m over 4 years) aims to reduce the impact of Australia's built environment on green house gas emissions, by reducing the energy consumed in the operation of existing commercial office buildings.

Equity of up to $3 million for companies involved in innovative renewable energy is available under the REEF scheme.

Re-Tooling for Climate Change

The Re-tooling for Climate Change program helps SME Australian manufacturers reduce their environmental footprint, through projects that improve the energy and/or water efficiency of their production processes. The program provides grants of between $10,000 and $500,000, up to a maximum of one third of the cost of each project.

Australia’s Farming Future – Climate Change and Adjustment Program

Assistance for primary producers to manage the impacts of climate change is available through a number of programs. The Climate Change Adjustment Program is part of Australia’s Farming Future and will assist primary producers adapt and adjust to the impacts of climate change.

Australia’s Farming Future – Climate Change Research Program

The Climate Change Research Program provides funding for research projects and on-farm demonstration pilots that address the following:

  1. Reducing greenhouse pollution
  2. Better soil management and
  3. Adaptation will include research into new adaptation technologies and new techniques.

Catchment Protection and Improvement Grants

Catchment Protection and Improvement Grants assist community groups to:

  • Protect and improve water quality through riparian and environmental restoration
  • Educate catchment communities about protecting catchments and water quality.

Central Coast Water Savings Fund

The Central Coast Water Savings Fund was established to encourage investment in water savings on the Central Coast.

Climate Change Renewable Energy Development Fund

The Renewable Energy Development Program under the NSW Climate Change Fund provides $40 million over five years to support projects which are expected to lead to large scale greenhouse gas emission savings in NSW.

Climate Change Residential Rebate Program

The $100 million Residential Rebate Program is part of the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund, established to help people make their homes more water and energy efficient. It provides rebates for rainwater tanks, climate-friendly hot water systems, ceiling insulation and water-efficient washing machines.

Climate Change School Energy Efficiency Program

The Schools Energy Efficiency Program under the NSW Climate Change Fund provides $20 million to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from NSW public high schools.

ECO Schools Program

This program provides grants to schools to give them the opportunity to involve their students and community in developing and implementing environmental management projects.

Emergency Pollution Cleanup Program

The Environmental Trust, through its emergency pollution and orphan waste cleanup program (EPOW CLEANUP), may contribute funds towards the costs of measures to remove, disperse or mitigate serious pollution when those measures need to be taken immediately.

Environmental Education Program

The aim of the Environmental Education program is to support educational projects or programs that develop or widen the community's knowledge of, skills in, and commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable behaviour.

Environmental Research Program

The aim of the Research program is to support research projects that help address environmental problems in NSW.

Environmental Restoration and Rehabilitation Program

The aim of the Restoration and Rehabilitation (R&R) program is to facilitate projects of significant environmental benefit to NSW, run by community organisations and State and local government organisations. Through these projects, we also aim to improve the capacity of communities and organisations to protect, restore and enhance the environment.

Environmental Trust

The Environmental Trust is an independent statutory body established by the NSW government to support exceptional environmental projects that do not receive funds from the usual government sources. The Trust is empowered under the Environmental Trust Act 1998, and its main responsibility is to make and supervise the expenditure of grants.

Heritage Grant Program and Funding

Programmes such as Envirofund under the $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust and the Australian Government's Community Water Grants, with $200 million over five years, supports groups that are taking on-ground action in their own backyards.

Integrated environmental program

Grants from $500,000 are available for integrated programs of up to 3 years duration for partnership proposals between the following groups.
Local government organisations, Community groups, Industry groups, Environmental groups, Universities and research organisations, State government agencies.

Monsanto Fund

Monsanto Fund seeks to improve the earth's ecosystem--including clean water, clean air, productive land and thriving biodiversity--and the well-being of her people by supporting various projects.

Norman Wettenhall Foundation Environmental Grants

The objectives of the Foundation are:

  1. to support and encourage research, education and recording of all aspects of Australia's natural environment; and
  2. to build capacity in local communities to effect long-term beneficial change in the natural environment.

NSW Green Business program

The NSW Green Business Program provides $30 million over five years for projects that will save water and energy in business operations in NSW.

NSW RiverBank

The Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) is responsible for managing environmental water allocations established under Water Sharing Plans and water licences held by government for environmental use.

On Site Sewage Management Grants

The program provides grants to minimise pollution risks to the drinking water resulting from on-site sewer systems. 

Renewable Energy Water Pumping Sub-program (REWPS)

The Residential and Medium-scale (RM) sub-program provides rebates for households, communities, not-for-profit, business, government and other organisations, in those areas of Australia not close to a main grid, to support the installation of renewable generation systems.

Riparian Management Assistance Program

This program assists property owners to protect, conserve and improve the condition and management of waterways. 

Special conservation loan scheme

The Special Conservation Scheme assists farmers within NSW protect the State’s biological and physical resource base by completing certain conservation works on their property.

Strategic Environmental Trust grants

The NSW City and Country Environment Restoration Program provides support to tackle the most significant environmental challenges.

Urban Sustainability Program

The Urban Sustainability Program provides support for the Environmental Trust to continue to work in partnership with local councils, to help the people of NSW to protect and restore the environment.

Water Smart Australia Program

The Water Smart Australia Programme supports on-ground water resource projects that will make a significant contribution to the sustainable and efficient management of Australia's water recourses until 2010. It is targeted at large-scale projects with the minimum level of funding for a project is $1 million.
