The built environment sector covered a range of industries involved in developing, building and maintaining vital infrastructure. Improved productivity is seen as the best way to maximise job opportunities and increase the standard of living for employees in the sector.  Construction alone contributes more than a tenth of GDP in the services economy.

The report stresses that it is an appropriate time for government and industry to continue to work in partnership to foster a culture of innovation in the built environment.  It focuses on four themes: Better Practice; Cooperative Research; Design Leadership; and Enabling Regulation and Procurement, with 10 recommendations for positioning the industry to achieve greater global competitiveness.

The Report outlines opportunities for collaboration between industry and government, including support for research institutes, skills training organisations and developing sustainable buildings and neighbourhoods.
